1 100v Line
A speaker and amplifier system that uses higher output voltages and step down transformers to allow very long speaker runs with negligible loss.
A Aero light
A lantern that takes any of the 28v PAR lamps used in the aciation sector. Frequently these have very narrow beam angles
Analogue control
The industry standard prior to DMX. Using one wire per control channel and multi-core control cable, a varying 0v to 10v signal controls dimmer intensity. (see also 'negative control').
B Balanced line
An audio system that generates an inverted half of the signal and eliminates signal intergerence as much as posible.
Barndoor
An arrangement of four moveable metal leaves placed in front of the lenses of certain types of lantern to control the shape of the light beam and reduce unwanted scatter.
Bomb tank
Steel enclosure for maroon or similar.
Borders
Stage draperies for concealing lighting and technical areas overhead.
C Carbon arc
A light source that generates bright light using a controlled electrical arc between two carbon rods.
Ceducer
An elctro-magnetic audio pick up device.
Ceeform
A comerecial, un-fused, range of high impact connectors. Colour coded by voltage
Colour wheel
A rotating disk fitted to the fornt of a lantern that changes the colour filters. Can be either continuous rotation or selectable colour depending on type.
Confetti cannon
A device for firing loose confetti into the air
Control Voltage inverter
Converts analogue 0v to -10v control signals to 0v  to +10v and vice-versa. Usefull when using older analogue equipment
D DAT
Digital Audio Tape, a type of digital tape format.
Dichroic glass
Glass wich has a thin metal film vaporized onto its surface. The glass transmits one color and reflects different colour. Used to providea rich palette of colours in effects lighting
Dichroic lamp
A glass reflector and lamp assemble that allows heat to dissipate through the reflector, thus increasing lamp life and providing a cooler beam.
Dimmer pack
device that distributes electrical cuirrent to the lighting being used. The a,mount of power being supplied to each lantern can be individually controlled using a lighting desk, or if fitted the controls on the dimmer itself.
Dimmer rack
An alternative name for a dimmer pack.
Dimming shutter
A mechanical device for rdimming non electrically dimmable sources.
Direct Inejct box
A device that converts an unbalanced line level signal into a balanced mic level signal.
DMX
A digital protocol used to send data from a controller to the divice(s) being controlled. Up to 512 simmers or device settings can be controlled using one output cable.
Drift
A terminated length of wire rope for suspending items.
DVD
Digital Versatile Disk, an audio and video format

F Fastfold
A trade name for a design of portable collapsible projection screen and frame.
Festoon lighting
A series of lamp holders mounted directly onto the cable.
Fibre optics
'Wires' containing a flecible glass strand core that transmits light. Bundles of fibres udsed to create a stunning stage effect on large cloths.
Fixture
A luminaire, a term frequently used for moving lighting etc.
Float fitting
A light source that sits on the floor at the front of a stage.
French brace
A timber scenic brace that is of a fixed height and shape.
Fresnel
Prounounced witha a silent 'S'. These lanterns offer a soft edged light with an adjustable beam angle for accurate focussing, some scatter light around main beam.
G Gel
A name for colour filter.
Gobo
Normally a piece of etched or cut metal, wich fits into the gate of a profile lantern and projects a patteren onto the set. Gobos can have complex designs or custom logos.
Graphic equaliser
A device allowing accurate boosting and attenuation of selected frequencies in a audio signal.
H Hedgehog ground anchor
Very secure ground anchor system for use in soft ground utilising specially angled pins.
I Iris diaphragm
A device that goes into a profile (or is fitted to a follow spot), that allows mechanical control of the size of light beam.
K Kva
Kilo Volt Amperes. Intials used to describe available generator power. KVA x power factor - Kw. For a filament lighting load KVA - Kw. Other loads vary significantly.
L Lantern
A preofessional name for stage lighting units.
Lectriflex
A trade name for latching rectangular multi-pole connectors. Theatre use of theses is normally mains voltage
Legs
Drapes for the side of a performance space, creating the wings.
Levalier microphone
A throat or tie clip style hands-free microphone.
M Maintaned emergency light
a light that is always on and reverts to batterey back-up in the event of power failure.
Maroon
Pyrotechnic effect for creeating a loud report.
MIDI
(Musical Instrument Digital Interface). A versatile control protocol wiwdely used by musicians.
N Negative control
an analogue control system using 0v to -10v. Found on older strand lighting control equipment
Non-maintained emergency light
A light that is off and lights from internal attereies in the event of power failure.
P Par can
a basic lanatern that uses sealed beam par lamps, wattage and beam angles are pre-determined by the choice of lamp.
Par lamp
Parabolice Aluminised Reflector lamp (american pronunciation req'd)! A sealed glass lamp, containg the lamp or filament itself a reflector and a lens.
Phono
an unbalanced mono audio or composite video connector.
Preset
A row of faders on a lighting desk for creating a single stage scene.
Profile
a lantern with an optical system rater like a projector which produces a narrow, hard-edged beaem of light (see also 'zoom profile' & 'shutter').
Pyro pod
Steel device for safely mounting pyrotechnic charges.
R RCD
Residual Current Device. An electrical device designed to interrupt the supply immediatelym once a fault current to earth is detected. Eliminating risk to life.
S Scenic Brace
A support for scenery, can be telescopic or solid.
Show Relay
Audio system allowing people backstage/in changing rooms etc to hear the performance on-stage.
Shutter
In a profile lantern, shutters are movable metal blades allowing the shape of the beam to be accurately controlled.
Slave amp
An amplifier with no user-operated colume controls on the amplifier itself.
Snake
A length of multi-core cable, usually used with reference to audio multi-cores.
  Spigot
A metal cylindrical adaptere screed to the yoke of a lantern allowing ti to be mounted on a stand
Socapex
A trade name for locking round multi-pole connectors. Mains (6 channel), or low coltage analogue control cariants are available.
Speakon
An audio connector specifically designed for use with high power professional loudspeakers.
Stage weight
A cast iron weight specially designed to be used with scenic accessories.
Switched maintained emergency light
A maintained emergency ligtht that can be switched as a normal light until the power fails, when it stays on, running of its internal batteries.
T Tabs
Stage curtaining.
Tank trap
Steel base for verticacl lighting boom or similar.
Tee bar
a metal barm often attached to the top of a stand 9making the top of a 'T' shape), allowing multiple items to be hung on one stand.
Three phase
Three supplies, 120deg. out of phase. Phase to Phase voltagee-415v, phase to neutral voltage-230v. Increased caution must be exerecised when dealing with three phase supplies.
Truss
A metal lattice structure offereing superb strength to weight characteristics.
Tube

An alternative name for thermionic valve, the predecessor to transistors, much regarded for ther 'warmth' of sound.

Tube composer
A device that replicates the sound of calce audio equipment.
U Universe (DMX)
a block of 512 channels of control data.
X XLR
A metal bodied connector used for audio and low voltage ligthing applications.
Z Zoom profile
A profile having two adjustable sets of lenses, thus allowing seperate control over beam angle and focus.
